Today is the 4th of July, a day of celebration in the U.S., and we in Israel rejoice and celebrate your Independence Day along with you.
But July 4th is also another anniversary. Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Entebbe Operation, the renowned hostage-rescue mission by Israeli commandos on the 4th of July, 1976.
Hostages were being held at Entebbe Airport, Uganda’s main airport, by Palestinian terrorists, following the hijacking of an Air France plane. In a daring raid, 100 Israeli commandos rescued all but 3 hostages and neutralized the terrorists.
The raid is also known as Operation Jonathan, in honor of Yonatan Netanyahu, The Prime Minister of Israel’s older brother, who was killed in action during the operation.
